Personalised underground bunker has become immensely popular these days. Now that you are planning to build a home bunker, it’s time to decode some digging tips. But before that, you need to get permission, choose your location, develop the blueprint, choose the building material and excavating equipment, and acquire fundamental living materials.

Only then can you proceed with digging. As a beginner, read the following considerations to perform the task effortlessly. Before you choose a home bunker design, you need to use a cut & cover tactic. This method requires you to dig the trench, create a support system, and place the bunker before covering it.

How to start digging: Some early preparations -

Digging is one of the hazardous construction jobs. Thus, you need to practice trenching. What you require to do is to install the protective system to prevent the cave-ins. Here’s outlining the three most protective systems: sloping or benching, shoring & installing the trench shield.

#1 Sloping -

It involves cutting the trench wall. You need to do this at an angle to create the slope. Not to forget, benching is an act that creates long benches to travel up the wall.

#2 Shoring -

It is the act of building the support system to keep the dirt in place. It prevents collapses.

#3 The trench shield - The trench box protects the individual inside from the cave-in. Instead, they get used to preventing one. Use it in conjunction with the two protective systems.

Some quick tips:

While opting for the digging process, please do not forget to consider how deep the bunker is going to be. Dig deep enough so that you can protect yourself and your people from natural disasters. But remember not to dig deep to risk trapping yourself. A thumb’s rule is that the bunker’s top must have no more than ten feet of the packer dirt atop. Dry dirt is warmer when compared to loose soil. And they can also protect against radiation & blast waves. But if you dig yourself, you would not have too much dirt atop you.
